For so long, I thought California’s name was just that—a name. I didn’t know there was a deeper story hidden within it, rooted in the legacy of a powerful Black warrior queen named Calafia. When I first learned about her, it felt like uncovering a piece of history that was meant for us but buried and left out of mainstream narratives. So, I’m sharing this story as the official launch of my Calafia Collection, a movement to honor her strength, leadership, and cultural influence.

Discovering Queen Calafia: The Untold Legend Behind California's Name

Queen Calafia’s story was first written in Las Sergas de Esplandián, a Spanish novel from the 1500s by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo. In the legend, she ruled over a mythical island called California—a paradise inhabited only by Black women and protected by fearsome griffins. Calafia herself was depicted as bold, wise, and fiercely independent. She wasn’t just a ruler; she was a symbol of power and sovereignty.

When Spanish explorers read the story, they were so captivated that they named the land they discovered after her, hoping it would be just as rich and magnificent as the mythical California. And while her story was fictional, Queen Calafia has come to represent something very real: the influence and contributions of Black women to history, culture, and identity.
